The Big Idea: a PhD in Sociology?
July 11, 2008
Maybe you’ve hit this page because you’re interested in a PhD (Doctoral study) in Sociology? If that is so, you probably have a rough Big Idea by now of what subject are you are interested in. Please click on People to find out more about our specialist supervision areas, and have a look at the Overview of our research for an idea of the kind of things we do.
We have particular strengths in: Family, Community and Domestic Life; Consumption/consumerism, Everyday Life and Contemporary Culture; Globalisation, Risk and Anxiety; and Urban Space and Post-urban Cultures. However we’d be interested to hear about any related project in Sociology, particularly in cultural sociology, sociology of interpersonal relations, and of space.
Keele University has a well-established supervision and training programme, including an ESRC recognised research methods programme. Sociology is recognised by the ESRC for 1+3 funding which means we can apply to them for financial support for the Masters’ in Research to be followed by PhD training. Grants, bursaries and scholarships are available from the ESRC, from Keele University’s Research Institutes and occasionally from other sources. However, applications are VERY competitive so we advise you to make contact with potential supervisors as soon as possible so they can help refine your research proposal and discuss funding applications with you.
You can find much of the information you need from the links in our page above about PhD opportunities, but, really, the main issue in getting started with a PhD is the Big Idea. If you’ve got this far, it’s because you’re only just finding out what you don’t know and what you really need to know. You’ll be excited by your Big Idea, ambitious, ready to take on the world. Share it with us: we can help it take off…
